What's up dog?
Kirra is a facility therapy dog who works with students at Mancel College. These students have a language disorder. She is able to regulate, calm and decrease anxiety in the students. Some of the students have spoken for the first time in their lives to Kirra. She can also identify seizures that are about to occur and help students attend school who have school refusal. She is written to many of the students learning plans and interventions. Staff, students and families love the support that Kirra gives to all in the College community on a daily basis. She is certified through Empower Assistance Dogs in QLD, owned and handled by me, as the Principal. She has been trained since 8 weeks of age by myself and is now 4 years old. She has worked in two schools during her life, previously at an Indigenous College where I was previously principal. She volunteers and old age homes and. Has visited hospitals and community events. Her work has changed the lives of many young people.Kirra has calmed and made many peoples days. She has helped children to read and speak and has identified anxious and unwell people. She supports them through recovery and illness and has increased the attendance the College to be around 90. Many students have now undergone handling courses to learn to handle therapy and assistance dogs through a program at Empower Assistance Dogs. She is a very special dog to all who have been able to work and be with her.
