Climate reporting and green hiring

Australia is introducing mandatory climate-related financial disclosures for large companies, starting 1 January 2025.

These rules aim to align Australia with global standards and improve transparency around climate risks.

What needs to be reported

As part of their annual financials, entities must prepare a Sustainability Report that includes climate-related disclosures aligned with the AASB S2 standard.

This report must also detail emissions, with Scope 1 and 2 emissions required from the first year of reporting, and Scope 3 emissions from the second year onward.

Additionally, it must cover the organisation’s governance, strategy, risk management, metrics, and targets in relation to climate risks.

Assurance and Compliance

ASIC will regulate compliance with the new reporting requirements. Limited assurance will apply in the early years, with full reasonable assurance required by 2030. A phased and supportive approach will be adopted throughout the rollout to help organisations adjust.
