2024: The year for career transitions. Is now the right time for a new job?

2024: The year for career transitions. Is now the right time for a new job?
Mark Smith: Now, a lot of us have got into 2024. Some of us have had a hangover. Some of us are still trying to lose the weight. I know that's me. I'm still trying to lose the weight. But it also might be a good time to start looking for a new job. So we thought we'd have a quick chat to Marisa Varudo from our Parramatta team about whether it's the right thing or is it the right time to actually jump into that job search right now. Now, can I hear a dog in the background there?

Marisa Varudo: I have put them outside, but they're so loud that you probably might still hear them. So I apologise in advance, Mark.

Mark Smith: No, no. Well, see, I think some of us, for those who don't know, we do have Oz Top Dog of the Year. If you don't know anything about that, check it out on our website. So this is not an advertisement for Oz Top Dog. This is about finding a job in 2024. Anyway, Marisa, what do you reckon? Should people start looking for a job right now?

Marisa Varudo: Definitely. I think with the time of the year that it is, and especially when people come back into the new year, it's about your new year, you've just come back and you've got a fresh perspective, especially if you were lucky enough to go on holiday over the Christmas break. From a candidate perspective, if you are looking to get into the market, you've come back and you've got your own resolutions, whether that's centered around your career goals or your own personal goals. You've come back and you're refreshed and ready to go. This is definitely the time out of the entirety of the year to take a step in.

Marisa Varudo: And I think from a client perspective, what might be a positive thing to tell candidates who are out there and thinking about it still, right now, our clients have come back into the office. Maybe they've even had a bit of a break over the year and they've had the chance to really re-evaluate the team. There may have been people who have left over the holiday break itself, which is evident, seeming as we have had 22, if the stats are correct, 22,000 people have become or have been registered as unemployed over the last month. So, you know, there has been a void that's been created in a business. So hiring managers may be wanting to try and fill that void as soon as possible into the new year. So definitely, yes, the right time to come in and join a new team possibly.

Mark Smith: Yeah. And what about your personal experience? I mean, so is the market we've seen some of the statistics released recently about unemployment, etc. You've mentioned a couple there. Do you have you seen a change in the market, say, from the end of last year to the beginning of 2024?

Marisa Varudo: I have, yes. So mainly because we work in the business support space in Western Sydney, what we've seen, there was a slight freeze in hiring towards the end of the year. Things did seem to slow down. But since the end of January, we've definitely seen an increase of requirements from clients, especially in that customer service and that administration space, mostly because they have either seen people who have left at the very end of last year or who have unfortunately resigned over the Christmas period. Or again, they've reevaluated the needs of the business. Things have increased in volume for different businesses, depending on the industry that you go into. And they've seen that they need to add to the team, increase their headcount. So if you are definitely in that business support space, there is opportunity there for sure.

Mark Smith: I definitely think it's across the board, too. Look, there's certainly a slowdown from where it was from those peak levels in the market at the beginning of 2022, sorry, and 23. But more recently, it's quietened down. But there's still a lot of activity going on. I mean, there's the number of vacancies we're registering, the number of people in the market. So it is a good time to be out there in the marketplace. Don't be afraid.

Marisa Varudo: Yeah. I think what I would like to add to that as well, Mark, is that if you are in the market to gain or get more information about going into a new opportunity, or even if you are looking to take a career into something different, there are a few pointers that I'd like to give to any candidate who is looking to enter into a role that they're trying to go into a higher level or become more of a senior candidate or even if they want to sidestep and go into an entirely new career path in general, you want to make sure that you do a few things. You want to research the industry or the role type that you're going to get into and make sure that you spend that extra time refreshing your resume over the next few weeks because we are seeing that there will be a kick-up or an increase in volume over the next few weeks so spend the time now getting yourself set up so you can start applying for the right jobs.

Mark Smith: Excellent great now if somebody wants to have a chat to you about the market or get some further tips or advice on what they should be doing how would they get in touch with you, Marisa?

Marisa Varudo: The details below so my email or my phone number zero two eight two seven zero nine seven three five.

Mark Smith: Excellent. Fantastic. All right. Well, thank you so much for joining us on P2P Live. Hopefully we'll see you again soon. And get the dogs ready to enter Austop Dog 2024.

Marisa Varudo: Definitely. Definitely. I will. Getting the camera ready. Thanks very much.
