Are you an experienced professional with a deep understanding of board appointments and public sector governance? This is a unique opportunity to step into a pivotal, short-term role and make a significant impact on the landscape of several key advisory bodies in New Zealand. We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Advisor for a 10-week contract in central Wellington to manage a complex portfolio of appointments.

Ko wai mātou | The Organisation

We are partnering with a central government ministry to find a seasoned professional to cover a critical function. This role places you at the heart of decision-making, ensuring robust and effective governance for entities that have a direct impact on the public. Your work will be crucial in progressing up to eight separate appointment processes for significant Crown entities.

This is more than just a contract; it's a chance to apply your specialised expertise to high-profile appointments. Working with senior ministry staff and board chairs, you will have the autonomy to manage the end-to-end appointment process. Your advice will directly influence ministerial decisions and ensure the selection of high-calibre board members. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing expert advice for Ministers on appointment processes.
  • Providing high-level support to interview panels.
  • Drafting comprehensive and high-quality appointment papers for Cabinet.
  • Driving multiple appointment processes forward to meet critical deadlines.

  • A proven track record in managing board appointment processes, ideally within or for large government entities.
  • A sophisticated understanding of governance capabilities and the use of board skills matrices.
  • Familiarity with the potential pool of candidates for board positions, particularly outside of government circles.
  • Exceptional written communication skills, with specific experience in preparing appointments papers for Cabinet.
  • Superb interpersonal and relationship management abilities.
