First Impressions DO Count!

Being in the Brisbane recruitment industry, I have met my fair share of people over the years and I am a firm believer that first impressions do count. Which is why I find it interesting that some people feel it is ok to attend an interview ‘with an agency’ or a prospective employer in casual attire (shorts, thongs etc.)

Irrespective of who interviews you or which organisation you are meeting, it only takes about 3 to 5 seconds for someone to evaluate you, when meeting you for the first time. Human beings form opinions based on how a person dresses and present themselves, their body language and their general approach to the interview. So, always present yourself in the best possible manner, as once an opinion forms, it can be quite difficult to undo or even change it!

Just focus on a few key points and you are sure to make the right impression when attending an interview:

Arrive on time

Actually, arrive 5 to 10 minutes before the allotted meeting time. This will give you time to ensure you are ready for the meeting, giving you time to calm any nerves and also show your eagerness for the opportunity.

Present yourself appropriately and be friendly

Irrespective of a person’s job role, always be courteous to the person whose job it is to greet you when you arrive, usually the receptionist. They are the people questioned by your interviewer for their opinion and first impressions of you. Be unfriendly or even condescending and that information is passed on!

Be confident…but not arrogant

If you are being interviewed for a role, remember your first selling tool is your resume, then your recruitment consultant and finally you. Remember that in this instance, only you will know what you can bring to a role and organisation, so don’t be too general, “Oh, you know the normal functions in that role” or “just administration”. Be specific.

Conversely, don’t be over confident as this too can be costly. Be honest about what you have done and what you can bring to the new role!

Dress for success

Always be dressed for success. I would rather attend an interview slightly over dressed and have the ability to remove my jacket, than to arrive under dressed with no opportunity to change it. Do your homework (or ask your consultant about the culture) and arrive in attire that screams SUCCESS!

So, when you do attend an interview, particularly here in Queensland, it is your time to shine and you have the power to create the best first impression!
