Let’s be honest, navigating the job market can be a daunting task but, if you have the right support and guidance for the journey, it can become more manageable. And one way to support you is by identifying and building a working partnership with a Recruitment Consultant who understands your experience, needs and requirements. But to build a productive and collaborative relationship that is focused on building your career, here are some tips to help you:

  • Open and honest communication - Effective communication is the cornerstone of any successful relationship – including the one with your RC. Be transparent and honest about your career goals, skills and expectations from the start. Share your preferences in relation to location, company culture etc. – the more your RC knows about you the more tailored their search will be to identify and match your needs.
  • Active listening – Just as you expect your RC to listen to your needs, it is important that you actively listen to their advice and suggestions. As an expert in their field (hopefully) they have a wealth of knowledge and experience that can assist you – so pay attention to their insights and knowledge as it might open doors to unexpected and rewarding career paths.
  • Keep a professional attitude – treat this partnership with your RC professional – like you would any other professional interaction. Be punctual for meetings, calls or interviews, respond promptly to emails / calls – this shows you are engaged and value the work that they do, and you will find this will lead to increased trust. And yes, this is a two-way street!
  • Provide feedback – After an interview – share your feedback with your RC – whether it was positive or negative – share your insights and experience as this will help them refine their search process to identify the best fit opportunities for you. Constructive feedback is valuable – in both directions!
  • Be patient and realistic – Remember when you are working with a RC, at the same time they are working with multiple candidates and clients simultaneously. And while their objective is to find the perfect role for you as quickly as possible – it is not always within their control.
  • Stay updated – Keep the communication flowing – update your RC if there is any change to your circumstances or situation as this keeps them up to date and if you are mid process with a role, update their client. But in general, it will enable them to adapt their search process to match what would work with your changes.
  • Express gratitude – Often a simple thank you in a call or in an email can go a long way in building rapport with your RC – acknowledging the support and work they are doing means they are valued, and you will find the partnership will strengthen.

Building any partnership is a two-way street but help enhance your job search experience by focus on fostering open communication, practice active listening, be professional and patient but still be yourself! Find the RC that gets and understands you and what your next ultimate role would look like!
