Iris, an internationally qualified Facility Dog through Guide Dogs Australia, has been supporting and enhancing the learning environment for students at Wirreanda Secondary School since 2020. On average, Iris directly works with 350 students per year and totals 3814 interactions with staff, students and broader school community. Current data reflects that 91 of 1590 students surveyed felt calm, relaxed and focused after working with Iris. Iris also influences positive staff wellbeing, with 87 surveyed feeling Iris presence supports to manage and cope with situations better, leading to more thoughtful and effective responses and decisions in their roles.
With the goal of supporting all students, Iris provides cross-site support through individual, group and class sessions across four different faculties (Alternative Learning, Wellbeing, Inclusive Learning, Disability Unit and Special Classes). Facility Dog Iris consistently demonstrates traits that inspire and set a standard for excellence. Iris approaches tasks with focus and dedication, maintaining high standards of animal assistance. Iris ability to adapt and accommodate student/school needs, different environments, remain disciplined and execute commands reflects professionalism. Iris exposure to the emotional state of vulnerable students requires resilience and courage. Iris regularly assists students in exposure to situations that are an anxiety source.
It requires courage entering these environments which present challenges such as noise, crowding, smells and distractions. Iris demonstrates courage and thrives when challenged through training. Iris presence also contributes to social sustainability empowering students to handle interpersonal conflicts, develop creative and critical thinking and empathy for others. Iris supports in minimising challenges and maximises positive outcomes, ensuring a positive future for all. Iris reminds us of the values that define excellence and inspires us to be better in our own pursuits.
