Sole In-House Counsel (Commercial Leasing & Litigation)

1. The Company
A privately owned organisation with a substantial Australian commercial property portfolio, this organisation operates in a fast‑paced, hands‑on environment where accountability and commercial outcomes matter. The business manages a diverse range of assets and works closely with internal property, leasing and facilities teams to support day‑to‑day operations and long‑term portfolio performance. The culture is direct and execution‑focused. The organisation values people who can be trusted with critical information, work without supervision, and keep pace with high volume commercial activity.
2. The Role
This is a senior in‑house legal role supporting the business across commercial and retail property matters. Reporting directly to a Director, the successful candidate will operate as a standalone legal function and work closely with senior stakeholders across Property Management, Leasing, Facilities and Finance.
  • Key responsibilities include: Drafting, negotiating and advising on commercial and retail leases, licences, variations, renewals, assignments and make‑good arrangements
  • Providing practical legal advice on landlord and tenant issues, lease interpretation and risk mitigation across the lease lifecycle
  • Managing disputes and litigation matters, including instructing and overseeing external counsel, reviewing documents and supporting strategy
  • Advising on a range of commercial agreements including supplier and contractor arrangements
  • Supporting internal stakeholders with clear, commercially focused legal guidance
  • Maintaining appropriate governance, compliance and risk controls across legal matters
This is a full‑time role based in Sydney CBD. Five days per week in the office is mandatory.
3. The Candidate
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical capability paired with commercial judgement and personal ownership.
  • Key requirements: 8+ years’ post‑admission experience (or equivalent), ideally 10–15 years
  • Experience working in a top-tier law firm
  • Demonstrated expertise in commercial and retail leasing
  • Experience managing disputes and working with external counsel
  • In‑house legal experience strongly preferred, though strong commercial lawyers from top-tier private practice firms will be considered
  • Proven ability to operate autonomously in a one‑person legal function
  • Strong numerical and commercial acumen with evidence of tangible achievements
  • Confident handling sensitive and time‑critical information
  • Proactive, reliable and organised with no need for escalation or chasing
  • Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, no‑politics environment
4. Benefits
Competitive remuneration, with flexibility to increase for high‑calibre candidates. Exposure to senior decision‑makers and end‑to‑end matters. High level of autonomy and influence within the business. Stable, full‑time role in a growing property environment. Clear expectations, direct leadership and streamlined decision‑making.
