Senior Policy Advisor - Regulatory

This is a rare opportunity to play a key role in a major, system-wide programme of work, underpinning the safety and future of one of New Zealand’s most critical sectors.

The programme is to modernise and improve an entire sector's regulatory rule set, given the emergence of new technologies, changing operating models and increasingly complex international standards.

The position is a Fixed Term employment role, with a 2 year duration, located in Wellington (remote working is not available).

To be considered for this vacancy, you’ll need to demonstrate all the required skills & experience listed below.

Essential Experience:

  • Level of experience: a minimum of 3-4 years’ as a Senior Policy Advisor in New Zealand
  • Experience working at a New Zealand Ministry, in a Policy role, in a Policy team
  • Experienced in providing policy advice and Briefings to a Minister
  • Experienced leading the development of RIS
  • Regulatory policy experience: Solid understanding of how regulations work, how regulatory decisions are developed, consulted on and implemented, and of the NZ machinery of government
  • Strong writing skills: able to convey complex concepts clearly and succinctly for senior decision makers
  • Well-developed skills in critically analysing and interpreting complex information, and making sound, well-reasoned recommendations
  • The right to work in New Zealand


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide second opinion policy advice to the Minister / Briefings to the Minister on the proposed rule changes
  • Develop any regulatory impact statements (RIS) that are required
  • Cross-agency work and stakeholder engagement


What’s on offer:

  • Term: 2 year fixed term employment
  • Location: Wellington
  • Team: dedicated and hardworking, with some fun thrown in for optimal working conditions
  • Working pattern: Full time; mostly office-based in Wellington, 1-2 days WFH as practical
  • Indicative salary range: $115 – $140K p.a., depending on skills and experience
  • Start date: asap (notice period acknowledged).
