Grad/Junior Lawyer (up to 1yr PAE) - Disputes

The Firm
A leading national law firm with a strong presence in the Canberra market. With approximately 60 people locally, the firm is known for its modern outlook, people‑focused culture, and strong mentorship environment. It consistently ranks among the AFR BOSS Magazine's Best Places to Work and is regarded for providing genuine access to partners, high‑quality training, and clear pathways for progression. The Canberra office offers a supportive, close‑knit environment where junior lawyers receive substantial supervision, exposure, and development. Maurice is the supervising partner for this role and is widely respected for offering practical guidance and meaningful learning opportunities.

The Role
The firm is seeking a Graduate or Junior Lawyer (0 to 1 PAE) to join its Disputes and Investigations team in Canberra. This is a priority hire, offering hands‑on exposure to a broad range of contentious matters and direct access to senior practitioners. The role includes:
• Assisting with commercial and contractual disputes
• Supporting senior lawyers in negligence claims and multi‑party litigation
• Working across insolvency matters and regulatory issues
• Exposure to property (real and intellectual), planning, and construction‑related disputes
• Drafting correspondence, pleadings, evidence, and research memoranda
• Participating in negotiations, mediations, and court processes
• Managing competing deadlines while delivering practical, commercially grounded outcomes
The Canberra D&I team is small, highly experienced, and forms part of one of the firm’s largest national practice groups, giving junior lawyers significant visibility and access to quality work early in their career.

The Candidate
The firm welcomes applications from recent graduates through to lawyers with up to 1yr PAE, already exposed to commercial disputes or litigation. Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with developing drafting ability
• Curiosity, eagerness to learn, and a proactive mindset
• The ability to work efficiently and manage competing priorities
• Sound problem‑solving capability and openness to feedback
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders
• A genuine interest in commercial disputes, investigations, and contentious matters
This role suits someone who wants hands‑on, accelerated learning and the opportunity to build a long‑term career under strong mentorship.

Benefits
The firm provides a comprehensive range of benefits designed to support wellbeing, flexibility, and professional growth:
• Market‑leading parental leave: 30 weeks paid for all permanent employees, with no tenure requirement, superannuation paid throughout, and access to external coaching
• Hybrid working arrangements (up to 2 days WFH) and flexible hours
• Ability to purchase up to 4 weeks of additional annual leave per year, plus one gifted leave day during the employee’s birthday month
• Wellbeing benefits including regular social events, EAP, private health insurance discounts, flu vaccinations, skin checks, recognition programmes, and more
• Continuous learning through mentoring, coaching, professional development, and study support
• Regular involvement in pro bono initiatives and volunteering opportunities
• A culture centred on responsibility, authenticity, collaboration, and excellence
