Hybrid working trends.

Hybrid working trends.
Mark Smith: How is the weather in WA before we delve into the hybrid working scenario?

Emma: It's beautiful. We still have some sun here. It doesn't feel too cold yet. We still need a little jacket, but it's beautiful out here. Always, of course. It always is, isn't it? There's always good weather in WA.

Mark Smith: Now, we're here to talk about this hybrid working trend. It's not hardly a trend these days. Everybody's been doing it over the last little while. But you've got some observations. Share those with us.

Emma: Yes, so I think hybrid work has been around, especially since COVID. It's the new normal. Everyone is asking for some flexibility. But what is new is that people are now asking for flexibility around the hours more so than the flexibility on where they want to work. They're asking, for example, to be able to finish early to pick up the kids at school, but also for other commitments like volunteering or a side job. It's getting more and more important to work three or four days a week rather than a full week. That's the trend that we notice a lot—people asking for that flexibility. I'm saying that we do have other priorities. At the moment, people are asking for more money and bonuses in general than really that flexibility to move forward in a new job.

Mark Smith: Are you seeing a shift with hours and hybrid working—working from home and the office—and the hours? It's that combination. Have you seen people trade off one for the other? For example, they want more flexibility in their hours but are happy to go into the office more or vice versa?

Emma: Yes, what people are asking for is some kind of flexibility from the employer. It's not just a one-way street. It's not just the job and the hours and where you're going to work. They like to be able to have some flexibility. Even though, for example, we might start a conversation with working from home, sometimes they're willing to go to the office every day if they're able to leave early, for example, and start a bit early. It's a bit of a concession.

Mark Smith: Are you ever seeing anybody saying or being bold enough to say, "If you want me to work these hours, then I need to have an extra ten thousand dollars," or are they trading off the flexibility for more money?

Emma: Not really, honestly. When they do ask for that flexibility, which we discuss with them as soon as we meet them, there is no further down the track disappointment about things that we discussed at the beginning. When they say it's important to them, they're usually not that flexible. If they need to arrange and pick up the children, they can't, or they need to organize and pay someone to go and do that. We just discuss that at the beginning, and then we are fine. But what is new is we see people accepting work without any flexibility at all—72 percent—while last year, it was about 55. So people are more willing to accept jobs with no flexibility.

Mark Smith: Probably accepting jobs with no flexibility but more money. That's what the world is like these days. If somebody wants to have a chat with you about the market in Perth or just generally about flexibility, how should they get in touch?

Emma: They can call me. It's the easiest way. They can come and see me in the office, and they can email me as well—whatever is easier.
