Courageous conversations in the workplace

Courageous conversations in the workplace
Mark Smith: Everybody loves remote working, but apparently, there are perils in doing it. We're going to have a quick chat with Jess O'Brien from the People to People Sydney team. Afternoon, Jess. Did you get to the Matilda's game?

Jessica: I watched it in the Allianz Stadium, but I was not there in person.

Mark Smith: Oh, you were outside the Allianz Stadium where they played it on the screens?

Jessica: Yes, so I felt the fan zone.

Mark Smith: Was it fun? Too busy?

Jessica: It was my first football game, a little bit challenging to watch from start to end. It was a good one, but obviously not as good as we thought.

Mark Smith: No, exactly. Let's talk about the perils of remote working. What do you mean by that?

Jessica: Essentially, with the influence of remote working in the last couple of years across all sectors, we have seen a certain level of employee disengagement with remote working. New starters tend to disengage when onboarding remotely. Technology poses an added layer, making it more challenging to have difficult conversations around performance management and professional development in the workplace. We're trying to tackle that, and we have a guest speaker, Ali Niche, coming in for our final lunch and learn event of the quarter to discuss ways to combat these challenges.

Mark Smith: It's certainly the topic of the moment, where working from home creates a disconnect between employees and employers, and sometimes difficult conversations are necessary.

Jessica: Absolutely. We're focusing on targeting HR managers and hiring professionals to provide better ways to combat these challenges and break down barriers.

Mark Smith: Sounds interesting. When's the event?

Jessica: The event is on the 13th of September, a Wednesday, at 12:32 p.m. It's a good networking event with catering provided.

Mark Smith: Fabulous. You recently did a LinkedIn poll about working from home. What were the results?

Jessica: I asked about having organic one-to-ones with managers, and 86% preferred them to be in person. People want that face-to-face connection for discussions about life or professional development.

Mark Smith: Interesting insights. Well, thanks for joining us, Jess, and for sharing about the upcoming event.

Jessica: Thank you. If anyone wants to reach out, my contact details are below. They can call me at 028270-9750 or email me at jessica.o@people2people.com.
