Benefits of working over the holiday season
Mark Smith: We're now joined by Demi from our Sydney team to talk about the benefits of working over the holiday season. How's the weather in Sydney, Demi?

Demi: Hi, Mark. The weather in Sydney, from last week, it's been a drastic change. We've had the privilege of a lot of sunshine this week and, like you mentioned earlier, going into a very hot 40-plus degree weekend. So, I'm looking forward to it. Are you?

Mark Smith: Yeah. Are you ready? Do you think you could...?

Demi: Um, I'd like to think so. Time will tell.

Mark Smith: Those who don't know, Demi is from the South Island of New Zealand, and I don't think they get a lot of 40 degrees in the South Island. Anyway, we're here to talk about working over the Christmas period because People to People stays open during that time. Many of our clients are hiring during that time, so what are the benefits of actually working over the break?

Demi: Absolutely. So, as I'm sure you guys are mostly all aware, the employment and labor market here in Australia during the end of the year season typically undergoes dynamic shifts, which we often refer to as the funny season. Many industries across Australia experience a surge in hiring as businesses gear up to meet the height in customer activity driven by this holiday festivity, which could be the likes of shopping and events.

Demi: So, the first benefit is skill development. There can be an opportunity to develop and enhance a variety of skills such as communication, time management, teamwork, customer service, and industry-specific skills which would be relevant to the job.

Demi: The next would be avoiding employment gaps. It can be tempting during this time to go away on holiday or perhaps have a break in your work year. However, working during this time can help avoid extended gaps when it comes to their employment history.

Demi: Employers may view consistent employment, even if it is temporary, as a positive indicator of motivation or work ethic.

Demi: The last benefit I will talk about that this can bring would be the flexibility. Temporary positions often offer flexibility in terms of working hours and commitments. This flexibility can be an advantage for individuals who want to balance work with other activities during their break, and it can often be desirable for individuals who are wanting to find casual or temporary work but still be able to enjoy that end of the year as well.

Mark Smith: Excellent. There is definitely work over the break. So, if anybody's watching thinking, "Yes, but is there really work?" Well, there is, and it's not just in hospitality. There are lots of businesses in essential services, including administration and accounting. For accounting, for example, companies that have December year-ends, there's definitely a need for people during that time.

Mark Smith: What about you, Demi? Are you working through?

Demi: I am working through, to an extent. I am going back to New Zealand where I will be contactable and online, working from home during that time.

Mark Smith: If somebody wanted to maybe they're looking for work in Sydney over that break and they wanted to get in touch, how would they do that?

Demi: Absolutely. You can either jump on our People to People website. All of the jobs we advertise are posted on the website, and they will have a relevant consultant attached to the role itself. So, you can get in touch that way.

Demi: My details will be on the screen as well in front of you. If you are looking for work, feel free to send your resume to me, or reach out to me, and I can pass on to the relevant consultant.

Mark Smith: Perfect. I can definitely see that the details are not only on the screen with the QR code, etc., but they're also in the comments right now on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and X. All right. Well, have a fabulous Christmas, Demi, across the ditch in New Zealand. Say hello to the Frog people for me, and enjoy the break. We'll see you again next year on P2P Live.

Demi: Thank you. Same to you. We'll see you next year.

Mark Smith: Right. So, we've got one more thing to look at, and that is the results of last week's Twitter and LinkedIn poll results. And here they are...
