Job Searching Challenges

Rachael Bates • May 10, 2021

I have a new appreciation for the challenges experienced by job seekers.

Recently, I found myself back on the home rental market. After being in my own home for the past four years, I needed to find somewhere for my family.

Much like a job hunt, the search started enthusiastically. I picked my geographical area, the type of dwelling and my price point. In my previous rental life, I hadn’t missed a property for which I had applied, so, I thought, this would be fine! I’d find the ideal place in no time!

Several rejections later I started to think ”what do I have to offer in a market where the landlords are spoilt for choice?” On paper, I’m certainly not the most attractive applicant, having no recent rental history, being a sole applicant responsible for payment and the demands of a boisterous three year old, coming along for the ride. There would be possible tenants (I assumed) who would be better situated, with duel incomes, no kids, and a recent rental history. In the property rental market with only 1.4% vacancy rates and well attended and busy open homes, was I ever going to find somewhere to call home? Do I cast the net wider, explore other options? Do I need to pay more?”

It's not unlike searching for a new job and when you least expect it.

It’s time consuming, stressful and full of uncertainty. It’s a situation I have re-established an appreciation for and for which, I believe, recruiters and hiring managers could be more mindful. The one thing I would say though, is to keep your options open. On paper, something may not look perfect. You might be looking for an increase in salary, you might have had your heart set on the CBD, or a smaller business you really wanted to join.

Sometimes in looking outside the box you can find the hidden gem of a role that will give you the long-term opportunities, great mentorship or flexibility. Something you may not have considered, without a closer look.
