Are you suffering from burnout? Here’s how to know and what to do.

2020, What. A. Year. It has been challenging for everyone, not just personally but also in the workplace. We have recently met with a number of HR and Practice Managers here in Perth and it is evident that a lot of us are busier than ever and really feeling it.

people2people conducted a mid-year snap survey that indicated 41% of Australian and Kiwi employees felt that that had been asked to do more work with less resources.

people2people spoke to Jane Davis, Director at The Flourishing Institute who said “Burnout seems to be more prevalent and many employees are experiencing fatigue and exhaustion due to prolonged stress. Right now, it is very important for leaders to listen deeply to their team members and understand their personal situations. Focus on meeting their needs; particularly the psychological need to feel competent, the need for control, and social needs,” says Davis.

Here are some of the signs of employee burnout:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headaches or tension
  • Shortness of breath
  • High blood pressure
  • Feeling irritable
  • Anxiousness
  • Loss of motivation
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering
  • Feeling disengaged
  • Disorganisation

What we can do

Firstly, prioritise your mental health & wellbeing, refill your own cup before you can start pouring others. It was WA Mental Health Week two weeks ago and there are plenty of things you can start doing today to put yourself in a better headspace.

Tony Robbins, entrepreneur and #1 NY Times best-selling author, shares his tips on how to do more with less time which include:

1. Find your purpose – find the reason for each task and how it fits with your goals

2. Say No – set boundaries and prioritise meeting your goals

3. Batch your time – multitasking doesn’t work, instead of stop, starting put similar tasks together

4. Plan – take time to plan out your long term, short term and mid-term goals

The World Health Organisation have officially recognised Burnout as an occupational condition, a syndrome occurring from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Now is the time to start managing your stress so that you can enjoy your personal and professional life.
