Hello December – New Year, New Me

Shelley Duong • December 1, 2019

Happy holiday season! As 2020 is fast approaching, you may notice a decline in recruitment activity as candidates focus on spending time with their friends and family and employers put a halt on recruitment as decision-makers go on leave. Here are three tips to keep in mind so that you can have a positive start to 2020.

1.Reflection

There are no mistakes in life, only lessons. There is no such thing as a negative experience, only opportunities to grow and learn. Take the time to reflect on your year and what you have accomplished in 2019. December is the season of celebrations, so celebrate your wins, big or small, of 2019. As you celebrate, think about what worked, what didn’t work and reasons why. This will be the first step to setting your goals for 2020.

2.Aspiration

Now that you’ve reflected on 2019, think about your new year’s resolution and what you would like to achieve in 2020. It is important to start your year with clear goals, so you are prepared and not feeling unorganised and unmotivated as the year begins. A manager once told me to be proactive, not reactive, and those words really resonate with me. If you want something, you need to take action. A goal without a plan is just a wish so create a plan for yourself. Things may not go to plan, but it is a step toward your goal, even if you change your plan midway.

3.Preparation

To make your goals a reality, start by taking advantage of your “new year, new me” vibe and get ahead. If you are already employed, start talking to your employer about your career plan and ensure it aligns with their business objectives. Your plan should enable your employer to utilise your skills and assist you in reaching your career goals for 2020. Think about what professional and personal development may help you along the way. If you are looking for work, update your resume and Linked In profile. Start touching base with agencies you may have worked with in the past and reach out to new ones to let them know you are open to discuss opportunities.

Now that I’ve got you thinking, set your goals and enjoy your holiday season. Give us a call when you are ready to discuss opportunities. Wishing you all the best in 2020.
