It’s Almost Footy Season and I’m Excited

Karen Thompson • March 19, 2018

Thirty-one years ago, I sat on an old wooden bench along the boundary fence at Subiaco Oval and watched my beloved West Coast Eagles run onto the field for their first ever VFL (Victorian Football League) game. In 1990, the league changed its name to the AFL – the Australian Football League as the competition expanded nationally.

In 2018, AFL in Perth will be turbocharged, thanks to the opening of our new world-class stadium – the 60,000 seat Optus Stadium. Evening games will be illuminated by more than 15,000 LED lights, making it the largest sporting lighting system in the world. Check out the amazing light show in this video. You won’t miss any of the action with two 340 square metre super screens, the largest in the southern hemisphere. There are also more than 1000 TV screens around the stadium.

Located next to Crown Perth , there are plenty of options for food, drinks and entertainment before or after games. And if you are coming from interstate, there is plenty of accommodation too.

We may not have trams to get to the footy like they do in Melbourne, but soon the public jetty will open, so you can arrive by boat. How cool is that? Or if you prefer dry land, you can walk from the city via the footbridge, take a train, a bus, a taxi, or park your bicycle in one of the 600 bike racks.

If you, like me, love your AFL, make sure you check out Optus Stadium. I’m sure I’ll get to watch the football in far more style than I did in 1987.

Don’t forget to sign up for our 2018 people2people footy tipping competition. There are some great prizes to be won, and most importantly of all, bragging rights if you are the top p2p tipster. Good luck!
