Does your job involve a lot of travel? Perhaps you are on the road, or in the air, quite frequently. We all have our own opinions on flying, and let me tell you, I don’t think I’ve heard many positives (people love to complain). There’s the restless legs, the cramping and the sick child sitting next to you. And then the snacks which are hardly snacks at all, filled with sugar and no nutritional value. Whilst this blog is not to be taken as medical advice and you should always seek a qualified medical practitioner, here are a few tips on how to stay healthy while flying.
Aeroplane food is limited. There’s not a lot of options out there, and the food provided is more often than not, loaded with sugars, preservatives and flavours. Plan ahead and pack some snacks for your flight. A healthy trail mix, almonds, a piece of fruit or veggie sticks are all great options!
Ah yes, a lot of us are familiar with swollen ankles and that puffy feeling after a long flight. Say hello to water retention. Avoid alcohol by all means – it’s really doing you no favours on the ground or in the air – and limit unnatural sugars, caffeine and salty foods like crisps and salted nuts. Load up on leafy greens and fibre.
No, I don’t mean you should get up and do some lunges down the aisle whilestin the air (although go ahead if you’re feeling up to it!). I’m referring to the times when you actually have the option to stand (and people aren’t going to get annoyed). Instead of sitting in the boarding area, waiting for your flight, try standing. You’ll be sitting down for your whole flight no doubt, so why add some extra sit time in there? Take the stairs if you can instead of the escalator. Movement can prevent lethargy, cramping and water retention and you’ll be surprised at how much better you feel!
