Where to Now? A Job Seeking Guide for Recent Graduates

John Doe • June 21, 2015

Congratulations! After months, potentially years , of study, you have finally finished your university studies, apprenticeship, TAFE course , etc. Graduation is right around the corner, and the real world looms over your head. So, where do you go from here?

Get your resume ready

Now is the time to prepare your resume, while all of your skills are still fresh in your head. Look online to find the perfect layout, remembering that it's best to keep it simple and easy to read. Use headings and subheadings to create sections and lists for important items/responsibilities that you have.

Update your LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn is an important profile to maintain as a lot of companies are using it to recruit now. Put in your impending qualification, and make sure you summarise what you learned so that future employers can see what specific skills you have. Also join groups that are relevant to your future career, as it may help you make contacts in that industry.

Consider further study

Not all positions will be open to you once you have completed your first course. If the position you want requires further qualifications, you might need to consider committing to another course. If you do decide on further study, check what your career requires so that you can make sure that you are doing the right one.

Get the job

If you have decided that it is time to get your dream job, it is time to start applying. Apart from all of the obvious job seeker websites, you can also consider recruitment sites to help you out. Have your cover letter ready to go, get interview ready, and put yourself out there. Moving on from study can be a stressful time. Make sure you have everything ready, be patient, and put yourself out there. Good luck!
