The Covid 19 gap: What to say in your resume

Sally • July 15, 2021

COVID-19 has brought disruption to all our lives, including the career paths for many of us. people2people’s recent Workforce Snap Survey found that 51% of businesses had to make tough decisions with their teams so having a gap in employment will be a reality for many candidates.

Here’s 5 tips on how to explain the ‘gap’ in your resume due to an unexpected job loss.

  • Be Honest
  • Whilst most hiring managers and recruiters will look at a gap in your CV for 2020 with understanding and empathy, it is important to keep your resume honest. Don’t try to hide it. Include the reason for leaving your last position to front foot any questions a potential employer or recruiter may have when looking at your CV for the first time.
  • Minimise the gap
  • If you have the work experience and opportunity, start freelancing or offer your services pro-bono to friends or small businesses. Not only will you be able to keep your skills current and potentially earn some income, but you will demonstrate to employers that you were proactive or contributed positively to assist someone else. If you have multiple contracts, group them together with shared responsibilities to give your CV a cleaner look.
  • Upskill
  • If you have lots of spare time, break up the boredom by learning something new! Many training organisations are offering their courses at discounted rates, and TAFE has over 20 short courses for free.
  • Go online
  • Developing your online reputation is more important than ever. Ensure you have a complete LinkedIn profile and the details between your CV and your profile are the same. With the recruitment process shifting online, it is more important than ever to be highly engaged online.
  • Consider a career change?
  • Perhaps you could utilise the time to reflect on what you enjoy and if there are other jobs out there that play on your strengths. Making that change can be daunting, but if you’ve wanted to do it and “not had the time” then now is perfect. If you would like some assistance in planning the move, people2people’s HR Solutions’ Career Compass is a good first step.

In a time of so much uncertainty, being worried about having a gap on your CV is understandable, but there is plenty you can do to get back on track. Good luck!
