3 tips to kickstart your career in 2023

Krystal Spittal • March 13, 2023

New year, new you? As the saying goes, choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life. Many of us have a dream job but landing it and achieving our career goals are often harder than we expect. The start of a new year is a time for resolutions and assessing your ambitions. Here’s how to set yourself up for success and achieve the career you dream of.

Jump out of your comfort zone:
It can be a scary thought for most to move jump into a situation that puts you out of your comfort zone. While the initial step forward can be unnerving, it can be greatly beneficial for yourself and your career to take that leap. My advice is to write down three things that make you feel uncomfortable in your current role and plan how you’re going to act on them. It doesn’t have to be huge. Baby steps will lead to changing your mindset and achieving your goals.

Be proactive on feedback:
Rather than sitting back and waiting for review time, pro-actively ask for feedback but make sure you ask specifically for constructive feedback! You will notice that top performing people tend to stay at the top of their game because they consistently search for ways to be and do better.

Don’t keep doing what you’ve always done:
As the saying goes, “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’re going to get what you’ve always got”. Change is difficult! If it wasn’t you’d be doing it all the time. Ask what it is that stands in your way. Is it confidence, qualifications, time? Each of these roadblocks can be overcome, often in conjunction with the other.
