I work with really smart and clever people. As a manager, how can I lead them better?
As we all know good people are hard to find and it sounds like you are spoilt for choice! Not everyone can manage. The best managers understand what motivates each of the individuals they lead; they listen, facilitate, make themselves available, understand and recognise unique talents, encourage and then set their people on the right path for success. Sounds a lot? Not really. As they are smart and clever, you just need to provide this framework to allow them to show you what they are capable of. You don't need to subordinate your own role in the process, as there is a lot they can learn from you (and vice versa). You are in a position to advise them objectively and provide them with the resources they may not know they even need! And, yes, the old cliché, 'Lead by example,' never goes out of date. Your team will always model themselves on the consistency of the qualities you display.
