Footy Tipping Winner Round 15

Posted by the Editor: June 30, 2009

Congratulations to Dominique Cormie at Rice Warner for winning this week’s Footy Tipping Round.  A seasoned campaigner, Dominique’s previous road to victory saw her win the 1998 MLC-North Sydney competition and ten years on, she has her eyes firmly fixed on the people2people competition.  Supporting the Sydney Roosters for numerous years, Dominique’s key to success is she has never tipped the Roosters.  Do you know something we don’t about the Roosters Dominique?!

Watch out Tippers, there is yet more to come.

Is your MS Office testing relevant?

Posted by manda: June 26, 2009

I had to look at my calendar again today to confirm it was 2009.

Why?

Because, yet again, I had received MS Office testing results from very capable business support candidates who are only being tested by other recruitment consultants on MS Office 2000! Speak to any administrative hiring manager and they will tell you it’s outdated. At people2people we have not accepted MS 2000 since MS 2007 was introduced and neither have our clients. This means that some of our valued business support candidates are unnecessarily having to redo their skills testing (if they have been given their results at all!)

If you are a candidate, this could waste precious time in your job search and if you are a hiring manager, what are you paying for?

No wonder both sides of the recruitment equation feel frustrated.

If you are asked to undertake MS Office testing and it’s not MS 2003 or MS 2007, ask your consultant why?

If you are hiring administrative staff, ask your consultant what version of MS Office they use for their testing. The answer might surprise you!

Over the past few weeks, I have received feedback from candidates who have registered with people2people. They have been very keen to have the opportunity to improve their skills. Part of our suite of services is the people2people Assessment Centre, a FREE service to candidates registered with us.

Online, you can undertake training in a variety of software packages or administrative skills such as typing. Visit our Assessment Centre to review the wide variety of training that is available. If you would like to undertake the training or need further information, please contact our people manager; peoplemanager@people2people.com.au

Long suffering supporter gains a dividend!

Posted by zichuan: June 18, 2009

Peter Gregory of Coal Services is this week’s Footy Tipping winner. Peter successfully picked a perfect round, particularly as for many it would have been better to forget to tip and go with the away games. An avid Sharks’ supporter, it was a rewarding week for Peter to see the Sharks win their third straight game. Coming a respectable 165th (that would be 10 places in front of this writer)Peter may have a little bit of work to do before threatening those at the top of the ladder. But as we’re just over half way, there’s still a chance!

I have a new job and I have to ask advice before I even start!

Posted by the Editor: June 16, 2009

Question

I have just found out that my brother is receiving a major award in Tasmania, six weeks after I commence my new graduate role. As it’s being awarded on a Friday, would you suggest avoid going or advise my new employer now so I can attend?

Answer

I would bring it up with your new employer as soon as possible (don’t do it via email please!!). Put it in terms of “I know this is short notice, I will make up the time, I understand if it’s not possible etc etc”. Don’t give the impression that it’s taken for granted that you can have the day off.
It also depends on what’s in the work timetable at your new employer around that time.  In these early stages, it’s all about your behaviour and perceptions about your behaviour. So be aware they will be watching your efforts up to and after the day of your leave.

My company has recently recruited the head of department externally and people in the department are not happy as they were overlooked. I want to make a fresh start, will I be perceived as ‘an eager to please’?

You have the right attitude! Those that made the appointment believe this is the best person for the job. The new Manager most likely has experienced this situation before and would be prepared for it. It’s time for people to get on with the job. It will be a poor reflection on those that don’t. It’s their problem, not yours.

Getting on with your job is not opportunism; it’s doing what you’re paid for, and remember, no one is going to look after your career better than you. Learning fresh ideas from a new Manager is very worthwhile, particularly if they challenge the status quo. That is not being “eager to please”. Those that don’t want to be there will eventually leave anyway and a new culture will emerge, one that will reflect how you like to work.
