It’s all about the connections

Posted by zichuan: February 25, 2008

Often people bandy about the phrase “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” and in recruitment that can definitely be true!

We met Galatea late in 2007 and were very impressed with her skills and personality. It did take a little while to find the right role for Galatea however we kept in touch and kept each other updated. We were able to find Galatea a role within a leading CBD based organisation and she referred one of her ex-colleagues who was also looking for a new role.

With a good background and an advantage due to her language skills, we were able to place Galatea’s ex-colleague in a long term contract role within three days at a large international consulting firm!

Earlier this month we managed to catch up with Galatea and give her the iPod she earned for referring such a great candidate.

Congratulations Galatea!

Partners not suppliers!

Posted by the Editor: February 21, 2008

Recruitment is an important function within any organisation. The quality of people on your team affects all aspects of company performance. Ensuring you work in partnership with your recruitment suppliers, either internal or external, will ensure success.

Yesterday I was faced with the unusual situation, as a supplier, of having to decline the opportunity of assisting a client. We had worked with this client previously at significantly discounted rates agreed as a result of a strong relationship between the consultant and line manager.

We were called on again earlier this week to recruit sales staff, a category of employees which normally has high staff turnover. Before we started the process, however, the line manager asked for an extended guarantee period (5 months) in addition to our previously agreed discounted fees. His view was that he could get staff from any number of agencies and that if we didn’t agree to his terms then he would go elsewhere. This was despite the fact that people2people had supplied good staff previously, he had a strong relationship with our consultant and we had already agreed to discounted rates.

We decided to no longer work with this client.

Walking away from business is very difficult no matter what industry you are in. It is particularly hard in the recruitment industry. people2people recognise that effective recruitment relies on a partnership between the recruiter and client. It is more than a supplier relationship. Partnership means understanding each others business and working together to get the best results in a mutually beneficial relationship.

We called ourselves people2people for a reason. Personalised services working in partnership with clients is our primary objective. I suppose the moral of this story is that sometimes walking away from customers who do not value your service and are not interested in working in partnership is ultimately better for business.

Thanks Mate!

Posted by matthew: February 15, 2008

It just goes to show what goes around, comes around!  A while ago we were thrilled to present Nadine with an ipod for referring Steffen to us.  Now, Steffen has earned one for himself!

Steffen recommended his friend Lisa to people2people, and needless to say we were impressed and found a fabulous opportunity for her!  Now, just to make the plot thicken, the role that we found for Lisa was to replace Nadine.  So the circle of life for referrals goes on!

Recently Steffen came into people2people to collect his ipod, and we were more than happy to hand it over.  Its good to see good mates sticking together!

Work hard, play dirty…

Posted by Kaden: February 7, 2008

Results are in from the inaugural people2people Cricket Dream Team competition. Congratulations go to Catherine Rowe from our Business Support Division, who was the proud winner of the $60 winner-takes-all grand prize. Twelve participants took the plunge, which spanned the recent four test series between Australia and India. There was much jostling for position early on in the competition, however Catherine made clear strides ahead midway through, actually ranking an impressive 35th out of over 18,000 participants Australia wide at one stage! Our naturally competitive nature led us to band together to try and bring Catherine down, but in true recruiter style she was able to see through all our dirty tricks and come through relatively unscathed, albeit battle weary and slightly emotionally disturbed. Special mention must be made of Alina (who knows nothing about cricket, and obviously received help from the outside), as she offered the only real resistance to Catherine’s amazing team picking prowess.

This is merely one example of the kind of off-the-wall, high falootin’ shenanigans that go on behind the tightly guarded back office at people2people; the central nervous system, or ‘brains-trust’ as it is so oft referred to. Although we take our work very seriously, we consider team building to be a crucial part of developing the business, and as such try to involve all our team members in exercises designed to release frustrations directly attributable to the brutal and unpredictable beast that is recruitment. Stay tuned for the upcoming NRL tipping competition starting next month (and possibly Super 14’s if Kirsten gets her way…)
