career management

'just working hard' or 'if I am good I'll be recognised and my career will look after itself' are just not true in today's market.

At people2people we have interviewed and continue to interview large numbers of people with varying specialisations each year. All of these people are at different stages of their career development. What is astounding is that many of these competent, often qualified, intelligent individuals have no idea where their career is headed! This often means that an individual’s full potential is not realised.

We observe when we talk to many of our people, as an individual gets more experience and begins to 'climb the ladder' the less emphasis is put on planning. Certainly it is true that during the formative years of your career it is critical to plan, this will have long term consequences. However, planning is an ongoing process. Our interests, skills and motivations change over time as does the economy, business environment and technology.
